The unprecedented rate and heavy use of dirty energy like coal and fracking is having a devastating and long term impact on our climate with the world’s poorest people suffering the most from its effects. Dirty energy use (the non-renewable source of energy that we consume in our homes) is increasing greenhouse gases which is a major contributor to climate change. It is estimated from 2030 to 2050 an additional 250,000 people will die every year because of climate change, resulting from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress (World Health Organisation).
Large corporations and governments are continuing to get away with the production of dirty energy whilst severely exploiting the earth (some of which are stolen resources directly from the poorest), and all without accountability. The overconsumption of resources in countries like the UK is a large part of the problem.
This is an injustice and Islam teaches Muslims to stand up against injustice wherever we find it.
The Green Up My Energy! (GUME) campaign asked Muslim communities here in the UK to revive the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of living within our means. As communities, we need to reduce our energy consumption and call on our government to ensure that our energy comes from renewable sources like solar and wind.

Greenhouse gases are gases that are emitted into the atmosphere which becomes trapped thus causing a greenhouse effect. The production and use of non-renewable energy (coal, gas and oil) have caused more greenhouse gases to be released, trapping more gases, causing temperatures to increase more and is the largest contributor to climate change.
